Window Frame

Choosing a window frame is essential especially if you are planning to make some renovations to your home. Actually, there are a lot of different types of a window frame and choosing the right type will help you to be successful in renovating your home.

Various styles of window frames can enhance your home and change the appearance of your home. For newer window frames, there are improved functions such as weatherproofing so that cleaning the windows will be more convenient and easier.

A window frame can also help in conducting heat which contributes to the window's energy efficiency. Since there are various types of window frames, the benefits can also vary.

Each type of window frame have its own pros and cons depending on the materials that made up the frame. However, the best materials for a window frame would be fiberglass, vinyl, wood and composite frame. These materials have a greater heat resistance as compared to metal.

Metals are undoubtedly strong and lightweight. There is not much maintenance for a metal made window frame; however, the thermal resistance of metal is weak, since it can conduct heat very easily. Its rapid conduction of heat makes it a poor insulator.

In order to reduce the heat flow, a metal window frame should also include a thermal break. This thermal break is an insulating plastic strip that is placed between the window frame and the sash.

As for fiberglass made window frame, these types of window frames are stable and have air holes. When these air holes are filled with insulation, it provides great thermal performance that is similar to insulated vinyl.

A window frame made from wood is a good insulator; however, wood can be easily affected by various weather conditions. Wood window frame is also heavier and has a thicker appearance compared to other types of window frames.

The wood type of window frame has more disadvantage than benefits because aside from being bulky, it also reduces the amount of natural light that enters the room. Among the other types of window frame, the wood type requires the most maintenance.

Composite frames are usually made of wood. Laminated strand lumber and particle board are used to create a composite made window frame. These are also stable and provide the same thermal properties like wood; however, composite frames are decay resistant as compared to conventional wood. It is also moisture resistant.

The most common and most convenient type of window frame is the vinyl type of window frame. Usually, vinyl window frames are made from polyvinyl chloride or PVC. It even contains ultraviolet light stabilizers which prevents sunlight from wearing off the material.

Apparently, PVC is a durable material and is also a good insulator. It is also moisture resistant and doesn't need much maintenance unlike wood. However, since it is made from plastic, it can also become deformed whenever it is exposed to extremely high temperature. Aside from that, constant sunlight exposure can also cause fading colors of the PVC material.

In terms of costs, the vinyl and the metal window frame are less expensive unlike the window frame made with fiberglass.

When you are choosing the type of window frame for you house, you should consider the advantages and the disadvantages of each window frame type.

Make sure that the type of window frame that you will choose will match the design of your house. Aside from that, you should also choose a type that will fit your budget and will require less maintenance.

The durability of the material is also important. Do not choose a type of window frame that can be easily worn out with weather changes.

When it comes to choosing a window frame, you also need to be practical.
